New Visit

Welcome New Patients

Everything you need to know before your first visit to Dr. Huang Clinic

We're excited to welcome you to our clinic! Your first visit is an important step in your healing journey. This page will help you prepare and know what to expect.

New patient appointments are comprehensive 90-minute sessions that include consultation, diagnosis, and your first treatment.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Your initial appointment follows a thorough, systematic approach

1

Intake & Health History

20-25 minutes

We'll review your completed intake forms and discuss your health history, current symptoms, medications, and wellness goals. This is your opportunity to share everything relevant to your health.

  • Chief complaint and health concerns
  • Medical history and past treatments
  • Current medications and supplements
  • Lifestyle factors (diet, sleep, stress, exercise)
  • Your goals for treatment
2

TCM Examination

10-15 minutes

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses unique diagnostic methods that give us insights Western medicine doesn't capture. These are completely non-invasive and painless.

  • Pulse diagnosis (reading 12 pulse positions)
  • Tongue diagnosis (color, coating, shape)
  • Observation (complexion, eyes, body language)
  • Palpation of affected areas if relevant
  • Assessment of energy and constitution
3

Diagnosis & Treatment Plan

10-15 minutes

Based on the consultation and examination, we'll explain your TCM diagnosis, what's causing your symptoms, and create a personalized treatment plan.

  • Explanation of your TCM diagnosis in understandable terms
  • How your symptoms relate to TCM patterns
  • Recommended treatment frequency
  • Expected timeline for improvement
  • Lifestyle and dietary recommendations
  • Answers to all your questions
4

First Acupuncture Treatment

30-40 minutes

You'll receive your first acupuncture treatment during this initial visit. Most people find it much more comfortable than they expected!

  • Comfortable positioning on heated treatment table
  • Insertion of ultra-fine, sterile needles
  • Additional modalities if beneficial (cupping, moxa, etc.)
  • Relaxation time (20-30 minutes)
  • Many patients fall asleep during treatment
  • Post-treatment check-in

Total appointment time: 90 minutes

Please arrive 10-15 minutes early if you haven't completed intake forms in advance

How to Prepare

Follow these guidelines to get the most from your visit

Eat BeforehandImportant

Have a light meal or snack 1-2 hours before your appointment. Don't come on an empty stomach, as acupuncture can lower blood sugar.

Wear Comfortable ClothingImportant

Wear loose, comfortable clothing that can easily be rolled up to access your arms, legs, and back. We have gowns available if needed.

Avoid Caffeine & AlcoholImportant

Minimize caffeine on treatment days and avoid alcohol completely. Both can interfere with pulse diagnosis and treatment effectiveness.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water before and after treatment to support your body's natural healing processes.

Allow Time After

Don't rush. Allow 15-30 minutes after treatment before returning to stressful activities. You may feel deeply relaxed.

Avoid Strong Scents

Please don't wear perfume or heavily scented products, as some patients may be sensitive.

First Visit FAQs

Most people feel little to no pain. The needles are hair-thin (much finer than injection needles), and insertion feels like a tiny pinch or mosquito bite, if anything. Once needles are in place, most patients feel deeply relaxed. Many fall asleep during treatment!
This varies by condition. Acute issues may improve in 3-6 sessions, while chronic conditions typically require 10-15 treatments or more. We'll create a personalized treatment plan during your first visit and adjust based on your progress.
Yes! You're welcome to bring a friend or family member. They can wait in our reception area or, with your permission, join you during the consultation portion of your visit. For privacy and optimal relaxation, they typically can't stay during treatment.
Many people who are nervous about needles are pleasantly surprised by acupuncture. The needles are extremely thin and insertion is usually painless. We'll go at your pace, explain everything, and can start with fewer needles if you prefer. We also offer non-needle modalities like herbal medicine, cupping, and massage.
Yes, absolutely continue all prescribed medications unless your prescribing doctor tells you otherwise. Acupuncture complements conventional medicine and doesn't require you to stop medications. Never discontinue prescription medications without consulting your doctor.
Rest! Avoid strenuous activity for a few hours after treatment. Drink plenty of water. You may feel deeply relaxed, energized, or sleepy—all normal responses. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours after treatment to give your body the best chance to heal.
Light exercise is fine, but avoid intense workouts right before treatment as they can affect pulse diagnosis and how your body responds to acupuncture. Save vigorous exercise for the day after treatment.
Please give us at least 24 hours notice. Late cancellations (less than 24 hours) or no-shows are charged 50% of the treatment fee. We understand emergencies happen and will work with you in those situations.
